The Head Coach – Skills Group is responsible for leading training sessions for a specific year group within the St Albans United Skills Section. This role focuses on developing core football skills in a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment, ensuring all players build confidence and enjoy playing the game.
Key Responsibilities
⚽ Plan & Deliver Sessions
- Design engaging and age-appropriate training sessions to help players develop core football skills (dribbling, passing, shooting, positioning).
- Lead Saturday morning sessions in line with the club’s ethos of fun, inclusivity, and development.
- Adapt sessions to cater for different abilities within the group.
👥 Manage the Coaching Team
- Guide and support Assistant Coaches, helping them grow in confidence and ability.
- Ensure all coaches work towards a positive, supportive atmosphere for players.
- Foster good communication with parents, ensuring they feel involved in their child’s development.
🏆 Encourage Skill Progression & Enjoyment
- Provide a structured but relaxed environment where children feel comfortable learning and playing.
- Ensure every child gets equal opportunities to participate in all drills and matches.
- Encourage fair play, respect, and teamwork in line with St Albans United’s values.
🔄 Coordinate Winter Training Arrangements
- Help manage the transition to winter training at Harpenden Rugby Club.
- Ensure players are aware of footwear requirements and session times.
Desirable Experience or Qualifications
✅ No formal coaching qualifications required—St Albans United will fund relevant courses.
✅ Previous experience coaching or working with children is a plus.
✅ Enthusiasm for football and a commitment to helping children enjoy the game.
✅ Strong communication and leadership skills.
💡 FA Coaching Support
St Albans United supports all new coaches in completing the FA Introduction to Coaching Football course, as well as FA Safeguarding Children and First Aid training. All coaching roles require a DBS criminal records check before starting.
Time Commitment
🕒 Saturday morning training: 1.5 hours (9:30-11:00 AM).
📝 Session planning & coordination: 30 minutes per week (flexible).
