At St Albans United, we recognise that every child’s football journey is different. Some enjoy playing purely for fun and skill development, while others are keen to test themselves in competitive league football. That’s why we offer two distinct but interconnected pathways:
✅ The St Albans United Skills Section – Focused on enjoyment, inclusivity, and technical development through non-competitive Saturday morning sessions.
✅ The St Albans United League Section – Competitive league football for those who wish to commit to regular fixtures and structured training.
How the Pathways Work
- All children begin their journey in the Skills section – Entry to the club starts in Reception. In Reception and Year 1, all players take part in weekly Skills sessions focused on introducing them to football and developing their abilities.
- League football becomes an option in Year 2 – Competitive football opportunities begin in Year 2 (U7s). Before Christmas, the Herts Youth League (HYL) runs a series of League Festivals every three weeks. These one-off tournaments allow prospective league teams to experience competitive football in a fun, pressure-free way.
- League teams can form from Year 2 onwards – After Christmas in Year 2, teams can decide to enter full league football. From this point, transitions between the Skills and League sections can happen at any time, as children and families explore what suits them best.
- Movement between sections is always possible – We understand that children’s needs and interests change. Some may try league football and decide it’s not for them, and we actively encourage them to return to Skills if they prefer. Equally, others may enjoy Skills for several years before deciding to step into competitive football.
We don’t see one section as superior to the other—they are simply different options designed to suit different children at different times.

Key Considerations for Families
Choosing between Skills and League depends on what works best for your family.
- Skills Section offers a low-cost, flexible, and development-focused environment where kids can enjoy football in a relaxed setting. It’s ideal for those who want to play regularly but without the structure of league matches.
- League Section involves a higher time and financial commitment but provides structured training, competitive matches, and the chance to develop as part of a settled team.

Training Pitch Hire – Why Is It Not Included?
Different St Albans clubs have different models—some charge more and include training pitch hire in their fees, while others don’t.
Across St Albans, there are limited floodlit astroturf pitches, many of which are subject to long-term block bookings. This means that available slots each season are limited, and we’ve found that it’s simplest for new teams to choose their own training slot based on what’s available and what best suits their families.
As we grow and add more league teams, we aim to secure a portfolio of long-term bookings and offer training slots as part of the membership. Over time, this will help us move towards a model where training pitches are included in the subscription.

FAQ: Your Questions Answered
How Are League Teams Formed?
League teams form when enough families express interest in competitive football. As we are a volunteer-run club, forming a team requires:
- At least one coach with FA coaching and first aid qualifications.
- A team administrator to manage registrations, fixtures, and league communications.
- Enough committed players for a full squad (including subs).
- A shared agreement on training night and midweek session location.
We don’t dictate when or how teams form—instead, we encourage open discussion among parents and coaches to coordinate interest. If you’d like to explore forming a team, speak with your group’s coach or share your thoughts in the year group chat.
If a Team Forms and We Don’t Join, Will We Miss Our Chance?
No! There is never a ‘last chance’ to join the League section.
✔️ New teams can form at any time – If enough interest exists later, a new squad can be created.
✔️ Existing teams expand – As players progress, squad sizes increase (from 5-a-side to 7, 9, and eventually 11-a-side). Existing teams will always look to add new players as they move up.
We encourage families to focus on what suits their child best rather than feeling pressured to join league football too soon. The Skills section remains an excellent option, and there will always be future opportunities to transition.
